USGS Hydrologic Technician

This position may require the employee to perform tasks such as wading in streams, carrying equipment over uneven terrain (up to 50 lbs.), working in heat and humidity and/or cold windy environments, working in (and potentially operating) small watercraft on rivers, lakes, and/or harbors, working from bridges and piers, climbing ladders, and managing these tasks in a field environment. The job duties also require that the employee spend a significant amount of time in the field. This is a field position, and the employee will need to be able to work in the field most workdays. The following tasks are associated with this position:

• Performs routine measurements of stage and discharge, applying various 
  methods and using different equipment depending upon the field conditions.
• Performs water-level and discharge measurements from wells and 
  springs, noting various field conditions.
• Considering field conditions, selects from a variety of well-established 
  procedures to perform routine field water-quality measurements such as water temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen.
• Installs, maintains, services and troubleshoots a variety of sensing, 
  recording and communications equipment and instrumentation.
• Enters, retrieves, and edits surface, ground and water-quality data 
  using a variety of software programs, spreadsheets, and graphics software.

There are three grades at the same position. A GS-5, GS-6, and GS-7. The higher grade requires a higher level of education and field experience to apply. The GS-5 position is considered entry level.
