Designer

Job Summary

Duties involve application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform an assigned task or sequence of tasks for site/civil engineering design, permitting, and construction phase service projects.   

Reports to:

Lead Engineer, Project Manager, or Project Engineer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Business Development
   1. Participate in business development efforts by directed interaction and quality service to existing clients
   2. Assist Project Engineer with scope and schedule derivation for new proposals
   3. Support other business development initiatives as needed.
2. Engineering
   1. Collects data and gathers information or documents
   2. Designs water, sanitary sewer, paving, grading, drainage, and erosion control systems using AutoDesk Civil 3D software
   3. Prepares stormwater, water, and sanitary sewer calculation reports
   4. Prepares drawings and visual aids
   5. Prepares construction cost estimates and quantity take-offs
   6. Performs research and investigations
   7. Assists with preparation of permit application packages and attend agency meetings
   8. Observes construction activities
3. Methods and Tools
   1. Contribute to improvement of procedures related to technical design.
   2. Support design and production standards and guidelines including QA/QC and constructability reviews.
   3. Support company functional team program as directed. 
   4. Provide feedback on utilization and improvements of available design tools.  
4. Staff Development
   1. Support the development of other Designers on project team.
   2. Provides feedback for personal performance reviews.  
   3. Provides peer feedback to supervisor for project team staff.
   4. Understands and contributes to improvement of company standards and procedures.
5. Community Development
   1. Directly involved with community activities personally and/or as a representative of company and/or engineering profession.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• 0-2 years: None
• 2+ years: Assign tasks to and coordinate with entry-level Designers, Engineering Technicians, or administrative staff. Assist with training and development of entry-level design staff.

3. Develop staff to established benchmarks

Work Environment

Ward Edwards is located at 119C Palmetto Way, Bluffton, South Carolina.  Position is office-based with frequent local travel to meetings or project sites.  The position requires daily time and expense entry for project billing purposes.

Education and Work Experience Requirements

1. Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering or related field
2. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) desirable
3. Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
4. Effective oral and written communication skills
5. Able to successfully demonstrate satisfactory ASCE “Guidelines for Engineering Grades” levels 1 to 3
